Who we are

About

Community Music Australia is the national voice for community music participation.

What is Community Music Australia?

We represent and support the thousands of Australians who make music together in community bands, orchestras, choirs, ensembles and other music groups. From major metropolitan centres to regional and remote communities, community music provides opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect, learn, perform and belong.

Community music is one of Australia’s largest cultural activities. It strengthens social connections, improves wellbeing, develops skills and creates vibrant local communities. Yet despite its significant contribution, the sector is often under-recognised and under-resourced.

Community Music Australia exists to change that.

We advocate for greater recognition and support of community music, provide a national voice for the sector, undertake research to better understand participation across Australia, and work with governments, community organisations and industry partners to strengthen opportunities for music-making in every community.

Our vision is an Australia where everyone has the opportunity to participate in music, regardless of age, background, location or experience.

Whether you are a community musician, volunteer, conductor, teacher, administrator, ensemble leader or supporter, Community Music Australia is here to champion the value of community music and help build a stronger future for music participation across Australia.

Our structure

Community Music Australia is a registered charity governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and supported by a small professional staff team.

The Board provides strategic direction and oversight, while staff are responsible for the delivery of the organisation’s advocacy, research, engagement and operational activities.

Together, they work to advance Community Music Australia’s mission of strengthening and supporting community music participation across Australia.
