Advocacy

We advocate for greater recognition, support and investment in community music, ensuring the contribution of community music organisations, volunteers and participants is recognised in policy, funding and decision-making at all levels.

Community music is one of Australia’s most accessible and widely participated forms of cultural activity. It strengthens communities, improves wellbeing, develops skills and creates opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect through music.

Despite its significant social and cultural impact, community music has historically received limited recognition and support compared to other sectors. Community Music Australia works with governments, funding bodies, industry partners and community organisations to champion the value of community music and promote policies that strengthen participation across Australia.

Current priorities

  • Increased investment in community music participation and community-based arts programs.
  • Recognition of community music as essential cultural and social infrastructure.
  • Improved access to funding, facilities and resources for community music organisations.
  • Reducing barriers to participation and increasing access for under-represented communities.
  • Supporting volunteers and community-led organisations.
  • Building a stronger evidence base through research, data collection and sector reporting.

Through collaboration, research and representation, we seek to ensure that community music is recognised as a vital contributor to Australia’s cultural life and community wellbeing.

We believe that every Australian should have the opportunity to participate in music and that strong community music organisations are essential to building connected, creative and resilient communities.
