Evidence base

Research & Resources

Community Music Australia is committed to building a stronger evidence base for community music participation in Australia.

National Community Music Survey

From 1 October 2026, Community Music Australia will undertake the first national survey of community music organisations in Australia.

The survey will gather data from community bands, orchestras, choirs, ensembles and other community music groups across the country to better understand the size, reach and impact of the sector. It will provide valuable insights into participation, volunteering, organisational capacity, financial sustainability, infrastructure needs and the contribution community music makes to Australian communities.

The survey will remain open until 31 March 2027, with the inaugural State of Community Music in Australia report to be released in June 2027.

The findings will help inform advocacy, support evidence-based policy development and provide, for the first time, a national picture of community music participation across Australia. Further information about the survey, including participation details and timelines, will be published closer to its launch.
